We all rushed into a building in Gleiwitz, people trampled over bodies, then my father and I had fallen. I heard a cry...that same faint voice had spoken to me before.
YOU"RE CRUSHING ME...HAVE MERCY!!!
I was getting crushed under the weight of other bodies. I started to have difficulty in breathing. I dug my nails into faces and bit arms, to find some air.
Suddenly I remembered...Juilek! The boy from Warsaw who played the violin in the Buna orchestra.
Juliek, is that you?
Are you alright Juliek?
Not too much air, but my violin!
Eliezer, yes...I remember.
He must have lost his mind. His violin? Here? I began to suffocate once more. With difficultness, I tried to find my father but I had lost sight of him in the crowd. I called him and after a while, he answered.
FATHER, ARE YOU THERE!?
...Yes, I am just trying to sleep
I was calm after I heard my fathers voice. In the silence of the dead, a beautiful noise arose. All I heard was that music played by a violin. I started to believe I was going crazy, then I remembered what Juliek had said.
He had played a song by Beethoven. Night came and I had fallen asleep to the music. That same night Juilek had died and his violin had been crushed right beside him. It was a reminder to me that there is no humanity left.
