Storyboard Text

  • Chemistry Bonding Project Name:Atiyk Ahmeed Period:7 Date:1/29/19
  • Welcome to Mr.Ahmeed's, chemistry class, our topic today is bonding
  • The valence electrons in ionic bonding are transferred
  • The first type of bonding is ionic and it is between a non-metal and a metal
  • The second type of bonding is covalent bonds are formed between two non-metals
  • The valence electrons in a covalent bond are shared
  • If you were wondering what these"valence electrons" are, to put it simply they are the electrons in the outermost shell of an atom
  • As previously mentioned in an ionic bond valence elctrons are transferred and in a covalent bond they are shared
  • The trends for the ionization energy applies to electronegativity(how bad an atom wants an electron)
  • In the periodic trend, you can see trends that affect bonding.
  • From left to right, ionization energy increases. From top to bottom, ionization energy decreases
  • The ionization energy is the energy required to take an electron in an elements gas phase
  • If you answered, covalent you would be correct. Let's move on to the next question 2)What type of bond is formed by sodium and chlorine(aka salt)?
  • If you answered an ionic bond, you would be correct
  • I have finished my instruction, now we will go over some examples. 1)What type of bond is formed between oxygen and nitrogen?
  • If you answered ionic, you would be correct. Here's the last example 3)What type of bond is formed between Calcium and Chlorine?
