Set in Midtown Mayhem,1999. Charly is the brother and somewhat dad to Buddy. Charly doesn't want buddy to grow up to be a farmer or a preacher because he knows he can do better and will be somebody someday. So to make that possible they make him go to school. In order to go to high school Buddy has to pay,but he has no money so his family pays for him, because they want him to be successful.
Buddy is getting ready to graduate high school at the top of his class and his family wants him to wear something nice. They give him all the money they have been saving up from working. His family members make a speech one by one and Buddy tells himself I am not the smartest, but the youngest as he admires his great family and what they have done for him. But he doesn't know what he is going to do from here.
"You got to look right, BUddy. Can't nobody look dignified carrying a brown paper bag"(Collier 157)
Buddy gets sent to war and three years of his life is taken away. He was suppose to go to college. He says the years have gone by fast and its weird how it can slip by like water slipping through your fingers.
After the three years at war with blood draws and pain for the GI bill Buddy goes to college. He graduates college and becomes a professor and works in New York at a school.Then he has a meeting near Charley, who he hasn't seen in a long time so he decides to visit him.
When Buddy gets inside the house everyone is suprised . They invite him for dinner and he stays. their is some left over Sweet Potato Pie so Bea (Charleys wife) gave him the left overs in a brown paper bag. Charley didnt want Buddy to walk into the fancy hotel with a paper bag because no one else would have one they were all rich, and he was somebody.
Buddy walks into the hotel mad that Charley wouldn't let him take in a piece of sweet potato pie. He had been really looking forward to eating that piece of pie.
