Storyboard Text

  • Previously...
  • With this creation of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, territories can decide if they want to be slave or free.
  • At the Kansas polling center...
  • I'm not even from Kansas but I heard there was open polling so I am definitely going to vote for pro-slavery candidates
  • The Missouri Compromise has been completely thrown out the window! If they can nullify it, we can create our own constitution, congress, and petition for statehood!
  • One night, radical abolitionist John Brown angrily went out during the night and murdered 5 pro-slavery settlers. This was known as the Pottawatomie Massacre
  • The Pottawatomie Massacre led to more civil conflict including warfare and money scandals between the North and South. These events became grouped together and named "Bleeding Kansas"
  • Overall, the events in Kansas led the North and South to become even more divided as they saw each other as rivals with unjust aggression. "Bleeding Kansas" ultimately became a powerful symbol of civil conflict and divide.
