Lizabeth likes to run under the sun with her younger brother, Joey. They enjoy running around, under the sun during the Great Depression but occasionally will go bother Miss Lottie about her marigold flowers.
Lizabeth gets angry after she accidentally overheard her parents' conversation about money. She awoke Joey and ran to Miss Lottie's to tear her marigolds right out of the ground. Miss Lottie looked at her with much shame.
In the end, Lizabeth realizes the beauty the marigolds showed during the rough times of the Great Depression and plants her own marigolds when she is an adult.
