In this chapter, Jem is starting to realize that Boo isn't the person that everyone says he is. Nathan Radley closes the trees knothole and told Jem that the tree was dying. In all, this wasn't true and Boo was being cut off from the world and this made Jem very upset.
In this chapter, winter shows up. Jem and Scout go outside and build a snowman. Later on, Ms. Maudies house catches on fire and as everyone is caught in a panic, Scout is left alone and cold. Scout doesn't remember how she mysteriously got a blanket around her but Jem and Atticus know that it was no other than Boo himself.
In this chapter, the kids are envious of the other dads around that can play with their kids. Atticus is too old to play with his kids and therefore they think he is boring. Later in this chapter, Atticus is asked to shoot a rabid dog on the loose and he shoots it from very far and doesn't miss his shot. The kids are very pleased and impressed by this but don't brag.
