At the beginning of the story, Lizabeth, her brother, and the other neighborhood children are playing outside. In this part of the story, she is still like a child.
In the next part of the story, Lizabeth hears her parents arguing and crying. She feels upset and confused. She's not sure who she is, and her whole world changes.
In the end of the story, Lizabeth lashes her confusion and anger out on Miss Lottie's Marigolds. She describes this as her last childish outburst and says this is the moment when she realizes she is grown up.
