In this scene, the English people decide to steal beans and corn. Though, they did say that they were just borrowing and were going to return the merchandise. If they did not steal the food, they would have died.
In this scene, the Native Americans are teaching the puritans how to survive. They have both signed a peace treaty, so, by teaching the English how to survive, it is like they are exchanging for protection.
