Overpopulation causes members of the same species, as well as otherspecies, to compete for limited resources like food, water and a place to live.

well this works for survival in the environment, but I'm not sure my changes make since over time...
An individual may inherit a genetic trait that increases the chance ofsurvival.
Organisms that inherit favorable traits are more likely to survive andproduce offspring which will inherit the favorable trait.
Favorable adaptations gradually accumulate, and unfavorable adaptationswill disappear over many generations. After a very long time, a new species can form.
