  • A Shocking Accident
  • By:Graham Greene
  • Austin Patton 5/1/18 English
  • In this story, Jerome is the protagonist. Though Jerome feelings about his father's death do not change it shapes him as a person and at the end of the story he settles with his father's death. Jerome was able to deal with his father's death easier and tell what happened to his father.
  • Jerome was called into the house master's room to recieve the news that his father was killed. Jerome was upset because everyone he told the story to laughted about it. Jerome was scared to tell his girlfriend about what happen but eventually his aunt sally told her and her reaction shocked Jerome which made hime fall in love.
  • The main conflict that Jerome faces is that when people know what happened to his father they will not respect who he is and only remember him by his death. This was very important to Jerome because he thought highly of his father. Jerome did not want his father to be mad fun of.
  • Jerome was happy because Sally was so supportive of his dad's death. With Sally's support, he realized it didn't matter what other people thought.  The extra support put an ease to Jerome's fear forever
  • The themes of the story are the absurdity of death and coming of age. I believe this is a wonderful short story because it shows a boy becoming a man. This story is excellent for teens to read because of its deeper meaning.
