The goddess Iris fell in love with a mortal that she met on a trip to the mortal world. After a while, they confess their love for one another. Iris neglects to tell him that she has a husband.
Oh heck no.
Who's this guy?
After months of seeing each other, Iris confesses to him that she is a goddess. Iris promises the man immortality and wealth if he is to be faithful to her. The man pledges his love for Iris, thinking that no misfortune would come of this.
Zephyrus, who is Iris's husband, was not aware of Iris's affair. This was until Iris went to meet up with her secret lover on the night of their one year anniversary. She forgot to make up an excuse to Zephyrus explaining where she was going. Getting worried, Zephyrus went to look for her.
Iris and the man meet at the park where they met, not having a clue that Zephyrus was searching for Iris. With the help of many sky nymphs, Zephyrus was able to track Iris down. His shock was evident when he saw Iris in the arms of someone else.
Furious, Zephyrus (who is the god of the west wind) flew a giant tree branch into the mortal man's head. The fatal hit killed him, leaving Iris devastated and horrified that she didn't act fast enough to stop Zephyrus.
Iris, not wanting to upset her husband further, didn't discuss what happened. Instead, she decided to move up north until the tension between her and Zephyrus lessened. In memory of the man she loved and being the goddess of the rainbow, she sent colors into the sky that would appear every year. Iris silently wept as the memory of her love faded, but she always had to northern lights to remind her of what she lost.
