At the beginning of the story, Montresor is a bitter man who wants revenge against an associate of his named Fortunato.
Montresor feels Fortunato has threatened him in some way so he plans to kill him, so he lies and brings him down to his vault to ''taste" Amontillado.
Montresor makes sure that all of his attendants were not at home so he could have the house empty. Montresor keeps giving Fortuanto wine to stay drunk so he can't help himself. Montresor brings Fortuanto passed the crypt with walls lined with human remains.
Montresor chains Fortunato to the wall and begins to build a wall to seal him.
Fortunato starts laughing crazily and Montresor starts poking a sword and and threw a torch through the hole in the wall. Montresor plasters the last stone and leaves Fortunato to die.
