  • Do you know what the geography of Japan is and what it's called?
  • Yes, it is mountainous, and it's through a chain of islands and it's called archipelago.
  • What parts of Japan's geography help or hurt the people living there?
  • Only 11% of the land can be farmed, although because of the mountains being volcanic in origin, the land is very fertile. 
  • Their relationship is positive because Japan sent representatives over to China to learn a new way of government, based roughly on the Chinese model. 
  • What is the relationship between China and Japan?
  • Japan's government couldn't defeat the aristocrats and this lead to the failure of the central government.
  • What is the importance of the Nara Period?
  • For government, they used a type of system where the emperor ruled only by name, called Shogun which is a military leader.
  • What type of government was used in the Kamakura Shogunate?
  • The decline of central power made the aristocrats take justice into their own hands and use military forces called samurai.  Samurai was on a strict warrior code known as Bushido. 
  • What came about in China during the Heian Period?
  • Who played a major role in Japan's society?
  • Someone who played a major role in Japan's society was Prince Shotoku.
