12 year old girl, Lise, and 5 year old boy, Free, lived normal lives. Their mom was a single but loving mother who cared for her kids more than herself.
Lise and Free always got picked up by their mom after school, until one day their mom didn't come so they had to go stay with the neighbor until they heard from their mom. After a while, the police showed up and told them that their mom had gotten in a wreck and was in the hospital.
After lots of physical therapy for their mom, it was finally summer. Their mom wanted to move to her home town for the summer, Fiddle Beach, Maine. Lise was furious but Free didn't care. When they arrived, one of their moms old friends, Micheal, basically lived with them since their mom could get injured if she fell on the beach or something.
Lise didn't like the beach because of what lies in the deep water. She met a man named Ben that lived at the beach for a long time. He taught her that the beach wasn't scary and that sand dollars were full of value. He taught her that under the mad waves, it was calm. He wanted to die at the beach because there would always be a part of him there.
A few weeks later there was a big hurricane coming so they had to move from their rattletrap house to Micheal's house. Right when the storm got bad she remembered that Ben lived really close to the beach and she didn't want him to die. She ran back to the beach to save him. She got devoured by the ocean and fought for her life for what seemed like forever. She got badly injured, finally, Micheal came and saved her. Lise thought her life was over.
Lise and Micheal had recovered from there injuries a few days later. Lise learned so much from Ben, she was not scared of the ocean anymore, now that Ben was a apart of it. One day they all went to the beach and collected tons of sand dollars. Lise was now thankful they got to go on this trip, she held onto her shark tooth necklace that Ben gave her and got in the ocean and swam, remembering it was calm underneath the madness of the waves.
