By Guy de Maupassant.
Mathilde, a middle-class woman, born to a family of clerks in Brittany, has married a minor clerk in the Ministry of Education. However, all is not calm in the family of two...
Look, i've got something for you...
The husband gives his wife an invitation to a reception, but as he sees, she weeps at the thought of not having a dress to go with. Her husband gives her 400 Francs to buy herself a fitting dress.
Why, the dress you wear when we go to the theater. That looks quite nice, I think.
After purchasing her dress, Mathilde's husband gives her the idea to borrow jewelry from one of her friends. She chooses a diamond necklace in surprise.
Mathilde then arrives at the party and stays late, becoming the center of attention and feeling ecstatic. However, as she arrives home with her husband she loses the necklace.
After losing such expensive jewelry, they search endlessly for hours with no avail. Mathilde's husband suggests she lies to her friend so they can have more time to search. They decide to put themselves into debt to pay for a new diamond necklace.
After a decade of paying off the debt, Mathilde looks aged and worn. She saw her friend, Madam Forestier, appearing the same age as before. She speaks to her and reveals she lost the necklace and has repaid the debt. However, it is finally revealed that the original necklace was only 500 francs instead of the 36,000 francs.
Oh, my poor Mathilde. But mine was only paste. Why, at most it was worth only five hundred francs!
