Lobsters, jellyfish, butterflies, squid, and beetles. They are all invertebrates! An invertebrate is an animal that lacks a backbone.
Let's look at a squid for example.
Hi! I am a squid. I am a invertebrate that you call a mollusk. Mollusks are invertebrates that have soft, unsegmented bodies. Other mollusks are octopus, snails, and slugs.
I am a jellyfish! Jellyfish are a type of aquatic invertebrate called cnidarians. There are over 10,000 species of cnidarians!
Next we have a jellyfish.
Now let's look at a beetle.
Hello, I am a beetle! I am considered an arthropod, just like the butterfly!
The beetle said we are both arthropods. An arthropod is an invertebrate that has an exoskeleton, and segmented bodies. You can see where the beetle's body is broken into segments! An arthropod also has bilateral symmetry. This means that if you divided me in half vertically, both sides would look the same!
Glossary- Exoskeleton- External covering for the body Segmented Body- A body that is divided into more than one part Invertebrate- An animal that lacks a backbone
So, now you know the different types of invertebrates! We are all unque and different in our own way!
