  • I wonder what this one will do for our country.
  • King Henry II
  • Right this way, Your Highness.
  • Henry II became king of England in 1154. He is noted as one of the strong monarchs of England during this time for his expansions of law. He made customs important in law with royal courts which later layed the foundation for English common law. A jury system was also developed under Henry II. These small groups of men decided the cases that would go to trial.
  • You must sign this document. It outlines the proper rights of those in this society!
  • Signing the Magna Carta
  • What? I control the rights!
  • Later on, King John ruled England. Nobles were unhappy with many of his decisions during his rule. In 1215, King John was forced to sign the Magna Carta by the nobles. The main points of the Magna Carta were that nobles had certain rights, there would be due process of law, and the monarch must also obey the laws. The Magna Carta led to the eventual development of the Parliament.
  • Yes! Better rights from limited power!
  • The Crusades began in 1096 after Pope Urban II commanded the Christians to take back the holy land. Christian fighters fought over the 200 year period because of religious zeal and the want to escape troubles at home. The Christians were never able to achieve their goals due to the Muslim general Salah al-Din and his powerful army.
  • Preparation for the Crusades
  • We must take back the holy land and defeat the Turks!
  • God wills it!
  • The Black Death
  • Oh no! Another one taken by this terrible plague. Oh wait, I have the buboes too!
  • The Black Death that arrived in Sicily by 1348 had spread beyond Italy to Spain and France. It killed one in three people during this time. The Black Death was caused by the bubonic plague sickness. This sickness was spread by fleas on rats.
  • Technologies of the Hundred Years' War
  • The Hundred Years' War was fought between France and Britain from 1337-1453. It started because of the English king declaring himself King of France. New technologies were invented on both sides during the war. The British had the longbow and the French had the cannon.
  • Our cannons will prevail!
  • I can shoot three arrows in the time it takes you to shoot one with my longbow!
  • Gothic Architecture
  • The cathedral looks even more beautiful with its new advancements in stained-glass window decoration!
  • In about 1140, a new type of architecture for cathedrals appeared. This new Gothic style was characterized by flying buttresses for support, high walls, and stained-glass windows. Sculptures that represented everyday animals, mythical creatures, and biblical scenes also adorned the churches.
