After being subject to feudalism for several hundred years in 1911. Chinese revolutionaries rose up against the Qing dynasty and succesfully siezed control of a large majority of China. Presidential power was given to Sun Yat Sen and he controlled part of southeast China.
The rest of country was controlled by General Yuan Shikai and they peacefully shared power for a while until Shikai totally seized power. He banished Sun Yat Sen and proclaimed himself emperor. He lost support and China was a nation divided.
The revolution that resulted in the end of Qing Dynasty was caused by an accidental explosion. After the bomb went off the revolutionaries realized that were outed and had to act.
Under Sun Yat Sen's reign communists and nationalists worked together to regain control of China. This union didn't last because the Nationalist leader, Chang Kai-Shek, didn't agree with the idea of a socialist revolution
This conflict led to civil war between nationalists and communists. The communists won and Mao Zaedung was the face and leader of the communist revolution.
The effects of Mao's centralized China were hard on landowners and peasants who'd done well for themselves. But to reject this new system would result in violence nd this would lead to public humiliation. On top of Mao's large task of making China communist he also was involved in the Korean War which was his first act as dictator.
