In the beginning of the story The Giver, Jonas is worried about the Ceremony of Twelve, where you receive a job in the community. He has no clue what job they'll give him.
Finally, the Ceremony of Twelves. In the Ceremony of Twelves, everyone has a number. Everyone's number should get called in order, and then they tell what job they gave you. Jonas' number gets skipped. Is is confused and wonder what he did wrong. He is confused, embarresed, and ashamed. At the end of the ceremony the Elder tells everyone that she has not made a mistake. She said that Jonas is different, and he has been chosen to be Receiver of Memory. She said that this job will include pain.
Jonas can't take it anymore. He doesn't want to live in such a basic world. Jonas and the Giver make a plan for Jonas to escape. The plan was for Jonas to just disappear, but Jonas decides at the last minute to take Gabriel, a baby who was going to be released, with him.
