Thomas Jefferson proposed an embargo to halt all trade with and from America. However, this hurt America more than it hurt Britain or France. 55,000 seamen lost their jobs "while their ships rotted at deserted docks."

Whether to go to war or not against Britain was very controversial. The New Englanders, or Federalists, opposed war. Many people in the South and West favored war. They resented impressment, and they accused the British of stirring up trouble amongst Indians.
We should totally go to war!

After going to war and winning the battle against the Indians at Tippecanoe Creek, the Americans discovered British guns on the battlefield. The Americans were outraged, and it increased the need to go to war against Britain.
After hearing this news from President Madison, War Hawks, or huge supporters of the war, were overjoyed. However, America lost all three times in war, and were forced back to the border by the British.
