Mattie is roused by robbers as they search for items to steal. During the confrontation Grandfather gets hurt. Grandfather shortly passes for other reasons Mattie is unaware of. Mattie wants to show the most respect for her Grandfather. She does this by burying him in the most decent matter possible.
Mattie begins to wonder not knowing what to do and where to go. She comes upon a small child crying. Mattie doesn’t feel she is safe, so Mattie takes the child with her and tries to find safety. She soon comes along Eliza and is brought to live at Eliza’s brother, Joseph’s house.
Joseph’s twins and Nell, the girl that was crying, all develop the fever. The move into the coffeehouse which is bigger. They all awake one day to see that frost is here. The kids recover from the fever.
Eliza and Mattie decide to move the coffeehouses furniture outside so the fever lifts from them. They thought the kids should get some air also.
Life slowly returns to normal. Mattie has decided to stay at the coffeehouse and work business there. Eliza is asked to become her partner.
Lucille returns from the Ludington’s. Everyone is joyous. She is still recovering and needs her rest.
