  • The first ever African American students to enter Central High in 1957.
  • This is their Story ....
  • September 23, 1957. A day that is etched in the mind of many Americans today. That fateful day the first ever African American students arrived at Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. This day was a very historic day that shed some more light into the treatment and discrimination of African American students.

  • The white students not very happy with the quote on quote "invasion", did everything they could to break the Little Rock Nine. Melba Patillo was kicked, beaten, and had acid thrown in her face. Ernest Brown was expelled not even a year after enrolling in February 1958 for retaliating against the attacks. This was only the beginning of their struggle. Gloria Ray was pushed down a flight of stairs.

  • The students were not the only ones being punished. Ray's mother was fired from her job after refusing to remove her daughter from the school. The students were completely barred from extracurricular activities. Although it was tough, on May 25, 1958 Ernest Green became the first ever African American graduate of Central High.
