Because of how unrealistic the hurricane daydream was, the tone was almost comedic in the sense that nothing like that could possibly happen in real life. The Commanders aka Walter Mittys co-pilots were all scared for their lives, while Mr. Mitty stayed calm, flying them through the terrible storm.
While putting in his driving gloves, Mr. Mittys imagination is at work again by sparking a daydream of being a surgeon. In the fantasy, he heroically fixed the anaesthesizer with a fountain pen. This relates to subject because the transition from reality to fantasy is really emphasized, and the main idea of the story is Walter Mittys imaginative life vs. his reality.
When Walter Mittys wife forgot something at her salon, she left Walter behind with his thoughts. This time he was standing at gunpoint against a firing squad, knowing with full knowledge he would not make it out of this one alive. This relates to purpose becaus it really explains how his imagination works, and how someone with a mental illness is affected daily.
