Salva sits quietly as he waits for school to be over. He's daydreaming of his mom waiting on him with a bowl of milk. He can't wait to get home and eat delicious food.
Salva's class hears gunshots. His teacher tells them to flee into the bush, and not go home. Salva is terrified, so he does as his teacher says.
As Salva and Marial are walking, Salva hears a familiar voice. It is his Uncle Jewir. Salva hadn't seen his uncle in the past two years because his uncle had been in the army. He is very relieved to have found someone in his family.
As Salva and his group are walking through the Akobo desert, six men carrying guns and machetes run torward them. The men yell at everyone to sit down and put thier hands over thier heads. One of the men ask Uncle Jewir where they came from then takes him to a tree. Once they get to the tree the man shoots Uncle Jewir and runs away along with the other five men.
After traveling one and a half years to go to a refugee camp, crossing the Gilo River, and being bounced around from camp to camp, Salva is at a camp in Ifo, Kenya. Salva is miserable at this camp. Everyone is always hungry because there isn't enough food. Salva wants to work so badly to make a bit of money, but there aren't any jobs
While Salva was at the Ifo camp, he meets an aid worker named Michael. Michael is from Ireland and he wants to teach Salva English. Salva began to really enjoy the language.
