After living in New York for six years, Salva sits down after a long day of studying to check his e-mail. He saw a message from his cousin who was working for a relief agency in Zimbabwe. The email said that his father was in a United Nations clinic and that he was soon going to have a stomach surgery.
Salva comes to Zimbabwe as fast as he can. He goes to the clinic where his father is staying. His father tells him that he can not stay because the war is still going on and either side will pull him to fight. His father tells him to come back when it is safe. Salva returns to the United Sates.
