  • In Italy, near the Mediterranean Sea, Romulus killed his brother Remus over a plot of land, which eventually became known as "Rome." Romulus made Rome a polytheistic monarchy.
  • The Roman Monarchy eventually collapsed due a revolt, and a new form of government, a republic, was formed.
  • The Roman Republic divided power among many people, including a senate and consuls.
  • The Roman Republic passed many laws that made things fairer for its citizens, like: the right of equal treatment under the law and that a person is considered innocent until proven guilty.
  • The Roman Republic's military was very successful. Both patricians and plebeians were soldiers and all male citizens were required to be in the army.
  • The Roman Republic had a successful military and they conquered all of Italy by 270 BC. They continued their conquest and expanded to Greece, parts of Asia Minor, and Carthage.
