The creature had awoken from his slumber in the woods. "This roused me from my near dormant state...I slaked my thirst at the brook, and then lying down, was overcome by sleep" (Shelley 179).
After several days of wondering the creature came upon an abandoned fire. "One day, when I was oppressed by cold, I found a fire which had been left by some wondering beggars" (Shelley 181).
The creature had come upon a man who was frightened by his appearance and ran. "I greedily devoured the remnants of the shepherd's breakfast, which consisted of bread, cheese, and milk..." (Shelley 185).
