In Poland, workers started to protest. They demanded changes in Poland. One of the leaders was named Lech Walesa. Walesa organized a national trade union known as Solidary. This gained the support of people and the Roman Caltholic Church.
During a period of military rule in the 1980s, Walesa was arrested. The movement still continued though.
Finally, after a new wave of deminstartion Poland agreed to the first free election in 45 years. In December 1990, Walesa was elected. He helped Poland try and help get free market reforms. In 1995, Walesa was beaten out for president. Kwasniewski was the new president and helped Poland's move toward a free market economy.
