Lily Owens lives in Sylvan, South Carolina on a Peach farm owned by her father, T-Ray. Lily struggles with her daily life since her father is not a nice man and her mother is dead.
Rosaleen's actions make her and Lily both end up in a jail cell for something that could have been easily avoided. This shows how willing Rosaleen is to defend herself and the opinion of her race.
After walking for miles and miles, Rosaleen and Lily finally arrived in town and were greeted by three racist men. After Rosaleen pours snuff onto Franklin's, the leader of the men, shoes. She is beaten and taken to jail!
After exhausting all other options, Lily has no more cards to play. She has to know what truly happened with her mother, and August is one of the only people that know the truth. Lily's entire journey has been about finding out the trust.
After coming to peace with the fact that her mother had abandon her, things are finally starting to cool off. Then T-Ray rolls into town and thinks he can take Lily back with him to Sylvan. For the first time in her life she is able to be treated as an adult by T-Ray. After seeing who she has become, he leaves town peacefully and lets Lily stay.
Lily has finally found her place in the world. She belongs in Tiburon, South Carolina with August and Rosaleen. However, Rosaleen and Lily are still fugitives so they begin to get legal help. Although the journey did not give Lily the answers she was hoping for, she finally has closure.
