Charlie Gordon is a guy that isn't very smart for an older man. Charlie has people helping him gain intelligence by having an operation done such as Dr. Strauss, Dr. Nemur and Miss. Kinnian and the rat named Algernon who also had help with intelligence.
Charlie has an operation being done on him by two scientists named Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur so that he can gain intelligence. Charlie has to write reports so the Doctors can mark his progress of his grammar improving." Dr. Strauss says I shud rite down what I think and evrey thing that happins to me from now on."(pg. 672)
As the operation goes on charlie Gordon's eyes open up to what is happening around him. charlie may be gaining intelligence but he is loosing what he thought were is friends. Charlie has came to realize that his best friends Joe and Frank have been making fun of him. "Its a funny thing I never knew that Joe and Frank and the others liked to have me around all the time to make fun of me." (pg. 686)
As the operation goes on Algernon started biting and stopped doing tests and mazes for food. As Algernon looses intelligence Charlie starts to realize that he might not be intelligent for much longer. "Burt, who is in charge of experimental animals, tells me that Algernon is changing. He is less cooperative; he refuses to run the maze any more; general motivation has decreased. And he hasn't been eating. Everyone is upset about what this may mean.''(pg.703, This means that the intelligence Charlie gained will eventually go away)
soon after Algernon dies this upsets charlie. Charlie understood that he wasn't going to stay smart so charlie tried to do research on the operation to improve it ,but he fails. In the end charlie moves away.
The theme of this story is that no matter who you are how smart you are you should be you.
