Storyboard Text

  • Hi I am Hikari and I believe in two religions.
  • How can you believe in two religions?
  • I can believe in two religions because they meet different needs. Shinto teaches about nature whereas Buddhism teaches you about the afterlife.
  • What does Shinto do different from Buddhism?
  • As a Shinto follower I believe I could call on Kami, (a nature spirit) at holy places like Shinto shrines. As a Buddhist I do martial arts and I meditate to find my inner peace.
  • When did Buddhism come to Japan?
  • During the 1100s, by the time Buddhism reached Japan it had formed into many sects. I am part of the Zen sect.
  • How has Shinto influence you?
  • It has influenced my love of nature and my striving for simplicity, cleanliness, and good matters.
  • I never knew you could believe in two religions.
  • Yup!
  • Wow, that's really cool. Thanks for telling me about your religions.
