  • In El Salvador land was traditionally owned communally, but in 1881 this practice was banned.
  • A few powerful land owners monopolised the plantations and forced the poor farmers off their land.
  • As land owners grew wealthier, farmers faced poverty and starvation and were forced into 'slave labour' with long hours and poor pay.
  • Very low coffee prices in 1929 meant that plantation owners didn't harvest their crops and the unpaid farmers starved...
  • … and took part in major protests. These were crushed by the military regimes which lasted for up to 50 years.
  • El Salvador became a very corrupt place to live.
