In the story “Thank You Ma’am” the ordinary world is shown in the setting of a woman walking alone at night with her purse on her shoulder.
The call to adventure happens when the boy gets booted out of his comfort zone. He tries to steal the older woman’s purse and run away but instead gets kicked and caught.
Give me my pocketbook back!
The boy wants the woman to let him go after failing to steal the purse, he doesn’t want to go to her house. This is an example of the refusal of the call in a hero’s journey.
Let me go please!
Your coming with me!
The woman becomes the mentor when she says “You ought to be my son” and “I got a great mind to wash your face for you”. She is trying to help the boy by taking care of him.
You ought to be my son.
Your face is dirty
The boy becomes committed to the new journey when he chooses to wash his face instead of running out the door.
Go wash your face son.
Should I run out this door or go wash my face?
The boy, Roger, gets to know the woman, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, and she starts to become a friend. Roger now has an ally instead of an enemy at this point in the story.
