Things in Cuba were bad because of Valerino Weyler but Yellow Journalism made it look worse.
Demands
From William McKinley We would like componsation for the U.S.S. Maine, a truce in Cuba, an end to reconentration camps and Cuban Independence.
The U.S.S. Maine was near Havanna because of riots but it exploded on February 15 and it was thought that Spain was behind it.
Treaty of Paris
William McKinley was the President and he wanted to stay peaceful.
Territory Gains
McKinley sent demands to the Spanish such as a truce in Cuba, an end to Reconcentration camps, compensation for the Maine, and Cuban independence. Everything was done except Cuban independence so war broke out.
After less than one year of fighting the Treaty of Paris was signed ending the war. The Treaty made Cuba independent.
For 20,000,000 dollars the U.S. got Guam, Puerto Rico, and The Philippine Islands.
