The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe Project by: Olivia Meskan Exposition
Fortunato and Montresor are at a carnival in Italy during the 1800’s. Fortunato is drunk and has a bad cough. He is dressed like a court jester with jingling bells on his hat.
Fortunato is clueless, but, he has insulted Montresser in some way. So, Montresor tells Fortunato that he will give him a bottle of Amontillado, they just have to go retrieve it from the catacombs, which he uses as a trap.
Montresor and Fortunato are walking through the catacombs to get the Amontillado while the reader's suspense grows. Montresor was very friendly by asking if Fortunato wants to turn back due to the fact he is ill.
Fortunato is suddenly chained up by Montresor. Montresor had been friendly to Fortunato all throughout the story. Fortunato is drunk so he laughs and is still of the belief that he is going to get the Amontillado!
The falling action is when Montresor is building the final layers on wall. He takes his time with this and reality sinks in for Fortunato.
The story is ended with Montresor throwing his torch in a hole through the wall he built around Fortunato. When he can no longer hear the bells jingling he knows Fortunato’s time to live running out and Fortunato is dead.
