The book Brave New World, begins with the Director of Hatcheries giving a group of young Alphas a tour of the hatchery. They will see the Infant Conditioning room where the babies are electrocuted to hate flowers and books.
Rising Action (Chapters 7-8)
In chapters 3-4, a type of conditioning is introduced where statements are made over and over to the young kids while they are sleeping. Bernard Marx, Lenina, Fanny, Henry Foster, and Benito Hoover are introduced. Bernard is a top Alpha but does not look like the rest of the Alphas, and has more feelings than anyone else.
Rising Action (Chapters 9-10)
In chapters 5-6, Bernard wants to go to the Mexican reservation, and asks Lenina to go with him one weekend. After she agrees he goes to get permission from the Director of Hatcheries. The Director is hesitant due to past experiences at the reservation, but gives Bernard permission.
Rising Action (Chapters 11-13)
Bernard and Lenina get to the reservation and meet John and Linda. Lenina is disgusted but Bernard is amused and finds out that John is the son of the Director of Hatcheries. Under the threat of being sent to Iceland, Bernard agrees to bring John and Linda back to the new world, to use them to his advantage.
Bernard brings John and Linda back to the hatchery and surprises the director. The director is disgusted and frightened. The other workers in the hatchery laugh at the director after Linda hugs him and John calls him father. The director immediately retires.
Everyone wants to see John the savage, which makes Bernard very popular. He throws parties for people to come see John, but after John refuses to go to one party, everyone will not like Bernard anymore. John will also confess his love for Lenina, but will be very offended and disgusted when Lenina forces herself on him.
