11 year old Salva is sitting in class like every other ordinary day. He isn't really paying attention to what his teacher is teaching or saying. His mind is thinking elsewhere. This shows how Salva's day seemed ordinary so far.
Suddenly while in the middle of class, Salva and everyone in the school hears gunshots. Salva and everyone was frightened. The teacher instructs that everyone flees into the bushes and no where else for any reason. Not even home. This shows that shootings didn't usually didn't happen while Salva was in school and scared everyone.
There are two groups: The men or the women and children's group. Salva doesn't know which one to choose because he doesn't know if he's a man or a child. He must decide.
After the woman and children group abandoned Salva, he met Dinka tribesmen. Following along with them, he gets reunited with his Uncle! They needed to travel to the refugee camp. Salva felt safe at last.
Salva, Uncle, and the group had to cross a very long and dangerous river, the Gilo River, to continue their journey to the camp. They had to build boats for everyone to cross. But after crossing, Salva's Uncle gets killed. Salva had no family by his side once again.
With Salva family-less, he is at the camp. There was a list of people to fly to America to find a new family to care for them if they did not have any family members with them. Salva's name was on the list to fly to New York and meethis new family.
