James I believed in the Divine Right of Kings along with his son Charles I. James believed he didn't have to work with parliament because the Divine Right of Kings gave him the power and no one else. James and parliament fought about religion, money and power.
I have learned from my fathers mistakes, I will not threaten Parliament.
The tensions between monarchy and parliament led to a war between the Roundheads and the cavaliers. The New Model Army that was led by Oliver Cromwell was victorious and eradicated parliament of the non supporters.
Cromwell publicly beheads King Charles to officially end the war. Oliver Cromwell then abolishes the monarchy and sets up a commonwealth. Cromwell ruled until he died in 1658.
Bill of Rights
In 1660 Charles II was made king, but he learned from his father and grandfather to not believe in the Divine Right of Kings and not threaten Parliaments authority. There was a Habeas Corpus Law were everyone gets a trial and cannot be held in jail forever. James II, Charles' brother, becomes king in 1685.
A group of English nobles encouraged William of Orange, husband to Mary who's brother James II, to invade and take over. James II fled after finding that there were little supporters from England. The revolution lasting for little time resulted in little bloodshed.
In 1689 William and Mary accepted the offer to the throne and came up with the Bill of Rights. Monarchy and Parliament ruled together and destroyed the theory of Divine Right of Kings.
