  • The Coercive, or Intolerable, Acts were passed from March to September, 1774. This was in response to the ending of the Seven Years War that led the British into debt. Parliament believed the colonies had to pay their fair share of taxes.

  • The Boston Port Act prevented use of Boston's port and suppressed the buying and selling of goods and traveling. This made Boston lose profit and goods.

  • The Massachusetts Government Act restricted town meetings to only once per year. Parliament was also free to appoint government officials to the town meetings. Patriots had to meet in secret at night to deliberate the revolution.

  • The Administration of Justice Act gave British officers arbitrary trials in other colonies or even England. The Patriots felt the trial of the Boston Massacre was nothing now that the trials are unfair.
  • The Quartering Act allowed British troops to be housed in any unoccupied building. This made the colonists agitated because it applied to all 13 colonies.
  • The northern colonists begin to use the phrase, "No Taxation Without Representation" to express their opinion on the Intolerable Acts. Many northern colonists also protested by forming mobs.
