  • "Yes," (p.53)
  • "And do you, Mariam jan, accept this man as your husband?" (p.52)
  • *Ahem*
  • The Burqa
  • "Where I come from, a woman's face is her husband's business only. I want you to remember that. Do you understand?" (p.70)
  • "It was strange seeing the world through a mesh screen." (p.72)
  • Domestic Abuse
  • "CHEW!" (p.104)
  • "Stop it, Rasheed, I'm--" (p.104)
  • In this scene, Jalil forces Mariam to say yes to Rasheed's marriage proposal. Due to the power Jalil has over Mariam as a father, Mariam has no choice but to say yes to Rasheed. 
  • At this point in the story, Rasheed tells Mariam that she is required to wear a burqa. Rasheed uses his power as an Afghan husband to enforce this new policy in his household.
  • Throughout the course of the novel, Rasheed is very abusive towards Mariam. Rasheed demonstrates his corrupting influence of power when he forces Mariam to painfully chew pebbles.
