  • we went visit some tropical islands

  • can you tell me what symptoms you guys have been having ever since the trip?
  • abdominal pain, chills, fever, fatigue and diarrhea
  • we can do colonoscopies, liver function tests, an ultrasound of the liver and even stool samples

  • what kinds of test?
  • its a protozoan parasite called Entamoeba histolytica that causes infections in the intestines
  • its seems you two have amoebic dysentery
  • what does that mean?
  • its mainly found in humans and minorly affects dogs, monkeys & pigs
  • its a flask-shaped parasite that comes from the ingesting contaminated food water, hands (feces)
  • it first starts with the ingestion of a mature cyst, then it occurs in the small intestine and trophoziotes are realized into large intestine and multiply by binary fission and produce cysts
  • can it be treated?
  • yes, it can be treated by medications such as Metronidazole if a case is severe enough surgery might be the best option
  • in some cases there is no recovery time for unsympathetic patients, in this case you're recovery time will be about 1-2 weeks. Remember to stay away from contaminated foods and water but to also wash your hands
