A family of four land on Mars during a war that is devastating Earth. Harry, the father, is unsure about Mars and as details start changing in everything, they and the people around them begin to lose themselves. By the time the war is over, they are unrecognizable as humans, instead dark, golden-eyed Martians.
The author emphasizes change in self through change in location
The individual is greatly impacted by where they are.
Mars, during a war on Earth
“The wind blew as if to flake away their identities. At any moment the Martian air might draw his soul from him, as marrow comes from a white bone.”
Dark They Were, And Golden-Eyed
"If we stay here, we'll all change."
"If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." -Wayne Dyer
Harry doesn't like being on Mars
"The children, small seeds, might at any instance be sown to all the martian climes. ... 'Let's get back on the rocket.'
The setting of the story causes the people in the story to change, directly related to the theme about the setting changing the person.
The setting is what supports my theme the most. It causes the changes the characters experience, and is how the story moves forward. My theme is directly related to the setting.
The main character, Harry, helps support the theme because throughout the story, he changes from not liking mars to becoming a Martian. The theme is crated when the characters change because of the setting.
Harry not liking Mars gives the story a purpose as well as a theme. It allows for the readers to see just how Harry changes the longer he spends on Mars. This is what makes the theme.
