Someone sent off a letter secretly without the NKVD knowing and to their excitement, they got a letter back. It was telling them that they knew they were suffering and that they feel their pain. It gave them hope that someday, a hero will come and save them.
Pass on the Drawings
Lina, the adults and children celebrate in secret Christmas. Though they did not have much to offer for presents, spending time with their friends was good enough. They sat down with pictures and told stories of what their Christmas was before being taken.
A Forgotten Birthday?
Lina stole profiles from the NKVD because she wanted to know where her father was. It was very dangerous because anything taken from the NKVD, could have terrifying consequences.
Leaving for America or Death?
Lina drew some realistic drawings of death and what has happened around her on a handkerchief. She soon passed on to another poor soul, in hopes that the drawings reaches her dad.
Lina thought that everyone had forgotten her birthday. When she came back from work, she was surprised with a birthday party! She was overjoyed because she thought everyone had forgoten considering it was hard to count the days.
Lina and her family were put on a list to go to America. What they didn't know was it all a lie and that they would go to Trofimovsk, near the North Pole.
