  • Hello, I am Gregor Mendel, and I am a scientist from the past. I studied genetics by doing experiments with pea pods.
  • ZZZZZZZZZ
  • These pea plants are ideal for the genetic studies because they reproduce quickly, have easily observable traits, and you can control which pairs of plants reproduce.
  • Well what about that.
  • I began these experiments by cross-breeding some purple pea plants flowers with some white flowering pea plants.
  • And now you know that the purple and the white flowers create purple.
  • The first generation was interesting. Purple and purple was purple, and white and white was white. But purple and white was all purple!
  • After many tests, I discovered that there where patterns in the offspring.
  •  You thought that the purple factor blocked the white factor, so it was a dominant trait.
  • Quite right, Toto.
  • The trait that disappeared from the first generation appeared in the second.
  • You began testing the other traits of the pea plants and found a similar ratio.
  • The first generation hybrids came from true-breeding plants. From two hybrid purples came mostly purple, but also some white.
  • Purple flowers grew from the cross 3 times more than the white!
  • My conclusion is that the two genetic factors control each inherited trait.
  • The dominant, and the recessive. The recessive is the trait that is blocked, the dominant appears.
  • You also pollinated 2 hybrids and purple flowers. About 75% had purple flowers
  • The second generation rocks!
