  • Hey Martha  what is this chronic wasting disease I've been hearing about?
  • Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a prion disease that affects deer, elk, reindeer, sika deer and moose.
  • Clinical signs appear 1.5 to 3 years after exposure and include excessive salivation and grinding of teeth, increased drinking and urination, dramatic loss of weight
  • The only conclusive diagnosis involves an examination of the brain, tonsils or lymph nodes performed after death.
