  • Cuba was rebelling against Spain rule and Cuba wanted the U.S to come help them. Cuba attracted American interest by burning the U.S sugar cane plantations, and reporting exaggerated news about the war.
  • U.S demands to the Spanish
  • President McKinley moved the battleship U.S.S Maine into the Havana Harbor to protect American citizens. On Febuary 15, the U.SS Maine exploded and sank, and the U.S blamed it on Spain.
  • Treaty of Paris
  • Americans called for war, but President McKinley wanted peace and did not want to call for war.
  • Territory Gained by the U.S
  • The U.S demands money for the Maine, an end to reconstruction camps, a truce in Cuba, and Cuban independance from the Spanish.
  • The Treaty of Paris was signed by Spain and the U.S in December of 1898. Spain recognizes Cuban independence.
