The Elevator by William SleatorMartin walks into the elevator and sees the fat lady for the first time
He runs to school and all he thinks about is how scary she is and if she really is scary.
After school Martin goes back into the elevator, and there she is, the fat lady, taking up all the space
Martin tell his dad about how scary she is and he says “You’re afraid. When are you going to grow up and act like a man? Are you going to be timid all your life?”
The next day, Martin uses the stairs instead, but the old lady is there. She grabs him by the hand.
