In the story "Dark They Were, and Golden-eyed" a family from earth goes to mars. The family gets stuck there because there is a war on earth. Harry one of the main characters is afraid of the big change he just made with his family. He is scared of the changes happening around him that are not something that would happen normally. To make matters worse everyone that has come to mars with him are changing, even he is changing.
Change is something that will happen even if we aren't ready for it
The author emphasizes that Harry is fearful of change and how he just wants to find a way to get out of it.
"His face was cold. ' What's wrong?' asked his wife. 'Let's go back on the rocket.' 'Back to earth?' 'Yes! Listen!"
"We are staying here!"
Dark They Were, and Golden-eyed.
"But something is different."
"Honey are you okay?"
"Sometimes you have to accept the fact that certain things will never go back to how they used to be."
Harry can't get back to earth
"Only a thousand of us here. No way back, No way. No way...He wanted to strike Laura, cry, 'No,you’re lying! The rockets will come back!”
The setting helped develop the theme because without the setting Harry wouldn't be scared of the change.
"Then he shouted for his wife. … 'Do you see? They’re different. They’ve changed! They’re not peach blossoms any more!' 'Look all right to me,' she said. 'They’re not. They’re wrong! I can’t tell how. An extra petal, a leaf, something, the color, the smell!”
The character helped develop the theme because Harry is the one who had the fear of change and the theme is about change.
The conflict helped develop the theme because the conflict is about how Harry is scared of change and the theme is about change.
"I'll never get back there!"
I think the conflict helped me find the theme the most in this story. This is because normally theme and conflict are related
