  • Mr. White and his son, Herbert, were playing a game of chess. While Mrs. White was knitting by the fire.
  • The guest, Sergeant-Major Morris, the White family was expecting had finally arrived.
  • "Well, wish for two hundred pounds..."
  • Sergeant-Major Morris tells the Whites about his adventures and the monkey paw.
  • Sergeant-Major Morris had revealed how the monkey's paw worked and left shortly after hoping they would throw the monkey's paw into the fire; where it belongs.
  • Mrs. White, Mr. White, and Herbert discussed what they wanted to wish for, not following Sergeant-Major Morris' wishes.
