The night was quiet and cold, as the house was. Herbert and Mr. White sat at the table playing chess. Time seemed to crawl by as the darkness consumed everything. Then a knock came at the door.
Mr. White answered the door, and was surprised to see Sgt. Morris, an old friend of Mr White. He brought a strange object that Mr. White had heard of before. The object was a monkey's paw that some thought was "cursed". Mr. Morris warned the family that the object was magical and that they need to be careful with it. "The object grants three wishes.....and three wishes only" said Mr. Morris eerily.
The family was excited to experiment with the paw. They had been struggling in the past few months with money and other things. "I wish for 200 pounds, enough to pay for our house" said Mr. White. The wish was not granted immediately, but soon they would regret their decision.
As the days passed by and the wish was still not granted, they family grew impatient. Herbert was working one day and the machinery caught him. His parents were devastated and received 200 pounds compensation.
Hardest hit was Mrs. White. She wished her son back alive as the second wish. There was a knock down stairs, which could only be one person. Mr. White had warned her but she did not care. Out of desperation Mr. White made one last wish, and the knocking ceased.
